Synthetic Type Specimen

Project Type: Typeface & Type Specimen
Role: Lead Designer
Synthetic aims to appeal to those looking for a typeface that has a futuristic vibe with a hint of retro style to it. I leaned heavily into the geometric aspect of the typeface while adding in rounded edges to accentuate the shape of certain letters. The color scheme went through a couple of revisions, but I knew I wanted to stray away from blue to avoid it feeling stereotypically “modern.” I landed on purple as it balanced the modern vibe of my typeface as well as connecting it to more retro designs.
The type specimen was made as a brochure to uniquely display the typeface and match with the visual style I was going for. I kept each layout as geometric as the typeface itself, and played with the shape of my letters to add more visual interest to the specimen.
This typeface is unlike any I have ever used in my other projects, which made it such a fun challenge to create. I ran into many roadblocks when my letters or numbers looked too similar. Due to the limits of the typeface that I made myself, I had to find creative workarounds to make each letter, number, and symbol unique. Ultimately, the result, along with my type specimen, is something I am very satisfied with.
